Overview

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) service provides remote (off-campus) access to JMU systems and services that are not directly accessible through the Internet. Students and employees can access Library resources and databases by default. Access to other systems or network file storage requires additional approval.

VPN Options:

  • Ivanti Secure Access: places your computer on the JMU network with a JMU IP address. While connected, all network traffic is routed through JMU’s network.
  • File Access: allows access to on-campus network file storage from off-campus (access to employee network file storage on the N: drive) through a web interface.
  • Browse and Web Bookmarks: provide quick access to restricted web applications. Only the network traffic associated with the web application is routed through JMU's network, allowing direct network connections to other resources.
  • Terminal Session: provides Secure Shell (SSH) access to UNIX servers and allows Windows Terminal Services connections.
Who can use this Service?

FAQs

When do I need to use the VPN service?
Anyone needing to access licensed library resources from off campus will need to use either OpenAthens or Ivanti Secure Access. Also, individuals who need access to network file storage, private server or services typically restricted to JMU on-campus access can use VPN for access. Some services will not be available from off-campus, even with the VPN.

Can I use the VPN service with any Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
Yes.  If you have questions about compatibility, contact your ISP.

How can I use the VPN service to access library resources from off-campus?
Choose one of the connection methods listed on the libraries "Connect..." resource page at https://www.lib.jmu.edu/connect.
