Overview

Information Technology provides network printing for faculty, staff, student employees and affiliates.  A networked printer allows multiple computers to print to a single printer.

Who can use this Service?

JMU faculty, staff, student employees and affiliates.

How can I get this Service?

JMU does not support wireless printers. JMU-Owned desktops and laptops connected to JMU-Official-Wireless can however, print to the managed network printers.

If you recently purchased a printer to be added as a network printer, please submit a request through the IT Service Portal to have an ESN tag assigned and the printer setup.

Printing Recommendations and Considerations

For cost effectiveness, it is strongly recommended to purchase a Laser/Toner printer for general use. Ink jet printers will not have as long of a life span and are considered non-repairable by our repair partners.

In situations where a printer is expected to be used for a single computer and connected locally (via USB cable), this would not require an ESN Tag or IT management. However, if the purchase will total over ~$500, it is recommended to purchase or lease a network printer for the department. Below is a list of recommended brands and example models for printer purchases to use as a reference when looking to purchase or replace for your department:

Brother and Cannon

  • Brother and Cannon printers can be purchased through Daly Computers or CDW-G
  • An example of suggested models would be Brother’s HL-L3280CDW or Canon’s Image Class MF653cdw

HP

  • HP printers can be purchased through Daly Computers or CDW-G.
    • An example of suggested models would be HP LaserJet Pro 3001dw
  • HP printers should not be purchased with the "HP+" or "HP Plus" configuration option.
  • If you are unsure whether the printer you would like to purchase has this option, please reach out to Procurement Services. Models with the "E" acronym at the end of the model number include the HP+ service.
