Overview

IT’s KnowBe4 training platform facilitates mandatory Security Awareness Training for employees and affiliates. All JMU employees and affiliates have access to KnowBe4 to complete assigned Security Awareness Training or to take optional training on-demand.

Annual Security Awareness Training: All employees and affiliates are required to complete assigned Security Awareness Training annually through KnowBe4. Emailed notification of assigned training will be sent to employees/affiliates annually and will include a deadline for completion of the training. Employees/affiliates that do not complete Security Awareness Training by the due date will lose access to JMU systems (Microsoft 365, Teams, Zoom, and more).

Other Compliance Trainings: KnowBe4 provides specialized compliance training to university employees who access, manage, and/or control regulated data sets (e.g. HIPAA, GLBA, etc.) or who have privileged access to systems that contain protected or highly confidential data. University employees required to complete these additional training courses will receive emails with training assignments and due dates.

FAQs

Why must I complete this training?
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires all new employees to complete Security Awareness Training at hire and then annually thereafter.

What has changed since last year?
Previously, JMU employees and affiliates completed the required Security Awareness Training every 90 days during the password change process. Since the move to Okta, employees and affiliates are required to complete Security Awareness Training only once per year through the KnowBe4 platform, and training is not tied to password changes.

How long does Security Awareness Training take to complete?
For most employees and affiliates, the required, video-based Security Awareness Training takes approximately 25 minutes to complete.

How long do I have to complete Security Awareness Training?
In 2025, all active employees and affiliates will be assigned training automatically with an initial due date of December 19, 2025. Beginning in 2026, annual training deadlines will be individual and unique to each user, depending on the last time they completed training.

Can I pick my own training assignments?
Employees and affiliates are required to complete the specific training that is assigned; however, users may complete additional, optional KnowBe4 trainings on-demand for personal knowledge.

Can I get an extension on the deadline to complete training?
IT provides a generous timeframe for individuals to complete the assigned training in order to accommodate a variety of schedules. Supervisors of employees on extended leave are responsible for ensuring their employee(s) complete assigned Security Awareness Training as soon as possible after their return to work.
