The Office of Student Accountability & Restorative Practices (OSARP) maintains the organizational records for recognized student organizations and student groups, and they are publicly available as outlined in the “Records – Recognized Student Organizations and Student Groups” portion of the Student Handbook. The university provides this information publicly so members of the community, including current, prospective, and future members of recognized student organizations and student groups, stay informed regarding organizational records. In addition, § 23.1-819 through § 23.1-822 of the Code of Virginia (Adam’s Law) requires the university to “publicly report actual findings of violations of the institution's code of conduct or of federal or state laws pertaining to hazing that are reported to campus authorities or local law enforcement.” For more information on Adam’s Law and the required hazing prevention training for members of the university community, please visit the Office of Student Life’s website.

It was determined that the following hazing behaviors occurred: high-risk consumption of alcohol competitions, members were forced to wear embarrassing costumes. | UREC outcomes: Disciplinary Probation through Fall 2023 (any incident in that year would result in club suspension); Ongoing and will be monitored throughout the 23’-24’ academic year by UREC staff; Suspended from practice and play through their first series for each team (D1 and D2) resulting in a forfeit of three games each; Required to participate in the VA ABC grant through UREC’s Substance Misuse Prevention staff . Internal Sanctions: A team wide zoom meeting was held, emphasizing that the email does not reflect the culture of the club, ourselves and the social chairs will apologize to anyone who may have been offended by it. Additionally, we will assure the team that the unhealthy tradition has been removed and it will not happen again; Beginning immediately, only core 4 exec members will be allowed to send emails that address the full club (Ongoing and will be monitored throughout the 23’-24’ academic year by UREC staff); An anonymous google poll was sent to the full team, asking if they wish to hold a re-election of exec members, and/or vote specific members out of their positions; The club’s constitution was sent out to all members so they were made more aware of what we as a club are about; A forum was held for members to propose amendments/addendums to be added to our constitution; The “social chair” position will be renamed the “community chair” position, in order to place an emphasis on a healthier team culture; The Club will begin to place a stronger influence on healthier team outings, like the ropes course, spike ball tournament, and a paintball outing (Ongoing and will be monitored throughout the 23’-24’ academic year by UREC staff) |
