The information on this page only applies to F-1 international students. If you are not an international student, please see JMU Admissions if you would like to transfer to JMU or see the Registrar's website for more information on withdrawing.
International students transferring out of JMU: read this information before you complete withdrawal forms from the Registrar's Office.
For SEVIS purposes, "transferring" schools occurs when a student goes from one school to another, regardless of whether the program or degree changes. You can be a "transfer student" moving from high school to college, changing from a bachelor's to a master's program, or transferring between schools in the middle of a degree program.
Transferring to JMU
- Students must be accepted by JMU and complete the process through Admissions.
- Students should make an appointment with their current International Student Advisor, Designated School Official (DSO), or Responsible Officer (RO) to inform them that they plan to transfer.
- Students must pay enrollment deposit (must be completed before JMU-ISSS can issue a new I-20).
- Complete the top half of the Transfer In form. Your current international student advisor must complete the second half and return the form to ISSS.
- JMU will issue a new I-20 or DS-2019 Form showing the transfer of the F-1 or J-1 visa sponsorship after the release date (typically the final day of the semester at the university you are transferring out of).
Transferring Out of JMU
- Notify JMU-ISSS that you intend to transfer.
- Contact the school you wish to transfer to for their transfer-in process.
- Complete the SEVIS Transfer Out application in Terra Dotta. You must include your acceptance letter to the new school.
- Notify your new school of the release date from JMU and once that date is reached, your new school can issue you your new I-20 or DS-2019 Form. You can cancel a transfer request only before the release date.
- Request a withdrawal from JMU. Go to Step 2 and fill out the Non-Return/Leave of Absence Notice.
