The Graybeal Scholarship was created to assist academically eligible international students who have encountered an unexpected financial need in finishing their degree at JMU. International Student and Scholar Services will award up to $5000 in scholarships per year, based on availability. The scholarship will be applied towards tuition*.

Many scholarships offered at James Madison University are given to students through departmental scholarship funds. Upon your admission to JMU, we recommend that you reach out to the department/program you will be studying in and express your interest in receiving a scholarship.

Below are four resources for outside scholarships (not offered through JMU).

• Refer to the International Financial Aid and College Scholarship Search found on IEFA’s webpage. It is the premier resource for financial aid, college scholarship and grant information for US and international students wishing to study abroad.
  
  
• Education USA, sponsored by the United States Department of State, assists international students with their Opportunity Funds Program. More than 100 American colleges and universities have enrolled Opportunity Funds students since 2006.
  
  
• The Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program (WU Scholars) supports young people across the world and their efforts to pursue a post-secondary education. Selected scholarship recipients will receive $2,500 each to contribute toward tuition* or school fees at an accredited post-secondary institution. To be eligible, students must be seeking an undergraduate degree in one of the following categories: science, technology, engineering, mathematics and business/entrepreneurship. 
  
  
• The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship provides scholarships for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the United States and Canada. Members of P.E.O. believe that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding. The scholarship is based upon demonstrated need; however, the award is not intended to cover all academic or personal expenses. At the time of application, the applicant is required to indicate additional financial resources adequate to meet their estimated expenses. Examples of additional resources are personal and family funds, tuition waivers, work scholarships, teaching assistantships, study grants and other scholarships. The maximum amount awarded to a student is $12,500. Lesser amounts may be awarded according to individual needs.

• Education Loan Finance (ELFI) is an organization designed to assist borrowers with student loan refinancing as well as undergraduate, graduate, and parent private student loans. ELFI has created a free, in-depth guide to finding and obtaining scholarships for those with Latino heritage. 

Loans are also an option for financing your education at JMU should you experience unexpected financial hardship.

• M-Power Financing can provide financial help (based on your academic success and career potential after graduation) to cover college costs without requiring a U.S. co-signer or credit score.
• International Student Loans offers international students loans to study in U.S. colleges, however, you should know that the signature of a U.S. resident is also required.
