Employment Authorization
U.S. government regulations allow international students to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session. While classes are not in session (i.e., official university breaks), the 20-hour per week limit does not apply.
Where to start/look?
- Go to JMU Joblink to look for any current job postings on campus.
- When you look for jobs, only the ones listed as “- IE” are the ones you are eligible to apply and work for.
- If you are considering working for Aramark/Dining Services, complete this online Aramark Interest Form and one of the Aramark employees will follow-up with you.
Certain jobs may ask you to upload a resume. Start here and then contact the University Career Center for advice on building your resume.
Now that you have been offered a job...
Before you begin working, there is a series of hiring paperwork that need to be completed.
Where will you be working?
For Aramark:
The Aramark Human Resources Office is located in the lower level of the Wine Price Building. They will need the following documentation of your identity (i.e. passport) and immigration status (i.e. I-20 or DS-2019, I-94, and/or permanent resident card) from you to complete your hiring paperwork and prove working eligibility (your Social Security Number- SSN).
For a JMU office or department (also known as Institutional Employment):
Your hiring supervisor/department will need documentation of your identity (i.e., passport) and immigration status (i.e., I-20 or DS-2019, I-94, and/or permanent resident card) to complete your hiring paperwork and prove working eligibility. In addition, you will need to apply for your US Social Security Number and make an online appointment at the Social Security Administration . Save that receipt so you can complete the I-9 hiring paperwork. After you have completed Part I of the I-9, you will need to set up a meeting with JMU’s Student Employment office to complete Part II of the I-9.
JMU Supervisors: once the student has completed both parts of the I-9, Student Employment will email you to say that they may begin working. They may begin working even if they do not yet have their Social Security Number issued to them. See Student Employment's page for more information.
