Investigators are ultimately responsible for compliance with all applicable regulations concerning Animal Laboratory Welfare. However, it is the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the institutional veterinary that normally interprets the animal welfare regulations and establishes guidelines for investigators to follow that will satisfy these principles. Faculty must complete the online training prior to IACUC approval.

Federal guidelines under the purview of the Federal Office of Animal Laboratory Welfare mandate that all investigators and key personnel who are frequently and directly involved be properly trained prior to working with animal subjects. This requirement is in accordance with our Federal Wide Assurance filed with Office of Laboratory Welfare filed with the Office of Extramural Research, National Institutes of Health.

Please direct all researchers whether they are students, staff or faculty to complete the online training described below.

Educational Materials - The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) has developed a course on Research involving animal lab welfare that is available on-line. The course covers the core animal welfare instructional areas to include working with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Federal Mandates, Alternatives, Personnel Training, Occupational Health and Safety and more.
