James Madison University's (JMU) Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is designed to support researchers in meeting their ethical and regulatory responsibilities to human research participants. The program has oversight of human subjects research, supports, and oversees the Institutional Review Board.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is tasked with overseeing all research involving human subjects conducted or supported through JMU research activities to ensure ethical considerations and compliance with regulations.

Our Mission

The mission of the HRPP is to:

  • Safeguard and promote the health and welfare of human research subjects by ensuring their rights, safety, and well-being are protected.
  • Provide timely and high-quality education, review, and monitoring of human research projects.
  • Facilitate excellence in human subjects research.
