Prior to making arrangements for JMU official travel to an international destination, a Pre-Approval Report in the Chrome River System must be submitted to your appropriate approving authorities. JMU staff and faculty also must consider potential compliance issues with research travel.

Restricted Party Screening

As scholars travel to promote international research and engagement, IRES can provide assurance that the party is not on a restricted entity list or help weigh the risks of a direct relationship with a scholar or institution found on the lists of federal, state, and university-level restricted international parties.

Requesting Restricted Party Screening

JMU scholars and staff can either perform their own restricted party screening or request IRES to complete the restricted party screening and provide you with a memo for your record on the search and its results.  See instructions under the Developing an International Research Grant Proposal tile to conduct your own screening.  JMU employees or units requesting IRES perform the restricted party and/or export recipient screening should contact IRES by emailing IRES@jmu.edu or call by phone (540) 568-4449. In either case, you will need to provide IRES a list of all known entities (individuals, companies, and universities) that are party to the planned activity along with their country of citizenship or business location, if known, to IRES@jmu.edu. Most requested screening is done in 1 or 2 business days.

Safeguard your data

When traveling internationally, the safeguards provided by JMU’s computing environment are not available. Examples of data that should be left on campus or afforded exceptional protection include information that might be construed as sensitive by the host government and non-public data developed as part of your JMU duties.
