Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest occurs when an individual's personal financial interests could directly and significantly affect, or appear to affect, the design, conduct, or reporting of university research. Real, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest may compromise public trust in the integrity of James Madison University's research and sponsored programs. While conflicts cannot always be avoided, they can often be disclosed, reduced, managed, or eliminated through appropriate oversight and management.

Conflicts of Commitment

A conflict of commitment occurs when an employee's external activities or relationships interfere with their ability to fulfill their university responsibilities. The university recognizes that professional activities outside of university employment can enhance professional development, scholarship, and service. However, employees are expected to ensure that such activities do not compromise their ability to meet their obligations to the university or create conflicts with their assigned duties.
