JMU faculty regularly invite international scholars to campus but like all collaboration they entail risks that can be mitigated by pursuing restricted entity screening.
Hosting Visitor
When inviting a visiting international scholar, you must use of the institutional application process [JMU Exchange Visitor & Employment Based Immigration Portal]. International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) will determine the visa required and inform the faculty member of the next steps required through the portal.
Faculty hosts can also gain IRES support in determining whether their visiting scholar or their home/affiliated institution(s) is a restricted party. Given the constantly evolving set of restricted entities, this step allows the scholar to work with IRES and their restricted party screening service to assess whether there are any risks associated with the indirect connection (hosting) a part to a restricted institution.
Requesting Restricted Party Screening
JMU scholars and staff can request IRES to perform a restricted party screening for entities under consideration as visiting scholars. University employees or units needing restricted party and/or export recipient screening should contact IRES by emailing IRES@jmu.edu or call by phone (540) 568-4449. In either case, you will need to email a list of all known parties (individuals, companies, and universities) that are party to the planned activity along with their country of citizenship or business location, if known, to IRES@jmu.edu. Most screening is done in 1 or 2 business days.
