The university has adopted the CITI Program's Biosafety and Biosecurity training course for individuals conducting research involving biohazardous materials. This includes research involving infectious biological agents, recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids, and select agents and toxins. The purpose of this training is to:

• Enhance understanding of biosafety and biosecurity principles
• Provide standardized training for faculty, staff, students, and other personnel working with biohazardous materials
• Support compliance with applicable institutional, state, and federal requirements

Who Should Complete the Training

Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, laboratory technicians, research staff, and other personnel involved in research using biohazardous materials should complete the CITI Basic Biosafety Training course.

"Research staff" includes anyone involved in research activities or the handling of biohazardous materials, including undergraduate and graduate students working with infectious biological agents, recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids, and select agents and toxins.

Training Guidance

The CITI Biosafety modules are designed to provide flexible, activity-specific training. As you review the available modules, you can identify those that are most relevant to your research activities. Depending on the nature of the work being conducted, certain modules may be required to ensure appropriate training and compliance.

• If you have a JMU e-ID, please follow these instructions.

• If you do NOT have a JMU e-ID, please follow these instructions.

1. Go to CITI Program and Log In Through My Organization or Register.

2. Add a course under Learner Toools.

3. Select ONLY "I need to take a course in the Biosafety/ Biosecurity."

4. Select the appropriate course for your research.

5. From the Main Menu, select "Start Now" to begin the course.

• Training is valid for up to 3 years.

• You do not need a JMU e-id to register for training.

• Training is free.

 Technical issues should be addressed to CITI Program.

If training was completed at another institution within the past (3) years, you can affiliate with JMU and transfer your training over.

1. After logging into your CITI Program account, click on the link Add Institutional Affiliation.
2. Type James Madison University in the search box.
3. Confirm you have selected the right institution and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
4. Answer the member information questions and enroll in the course(s).

Please Note: To transfer course credit between institutions, you will need to be affiliated with both institutions (your previous institution and JMU). When you are affiliated with both institutions, enroll in the courses that need to be transferred  You will need to enroll in the same stage of the course (Basic / Refresher) for a transfer to occur.
