The university has adopted the use of the CITI Program’s Biosafety/Biosecurity training course for individuals conducting research involving biohazardous materials. This includes work with Infectious Biological Agents, Recombinant DNA, and Select Agents. The purpose of this training is to:

• Enhance understanding of biosafety principles
• Provide standardized training for university personnel, including faculty, staff, students, and lab personnel
• Support compliance with applicable regulations

Who Should Complete the Training

It is recommended that all Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, Laboratory Technicians, and Research Staff involved in research using biohazardous materials complete the CITI Basic Biosafety Training course.

"Research Staff" includes anyone, such as undergraduate or graduate students, who conducts research or handles biohazardous materials, including Infectious Biological Agents, Recombinant DNA, and Select Agents.

Training Guidance

The CITI Biosafety modules are designed to serve as a flexible training tool. As you review the available modules, you will be able to identify which ones are most relevant, and in some cases, essential, to your specific research activities.

• If you have a JMU e-ID, please follow these instructions.

• If you do NOT have a JMU e-ID, please follow these instructions.

1. Go to https://about.citiprogram.org/ and Log In Through My Organization or Register.

2. Add a course under Learner Toools.

3. Select ONLY "I need to take a course in the Biosafety/ Biosecurity."

4. Select the appropriate course for your research.

5. From the Main Menu, select "Start Now" to begin the course.

• Training is valid for up to 3 years.

• You do not need a JMU e-id to register for training.

• Training is free.

If training was completed at another institution within the past (3) years, you can affiliate with JMU and transfer your training over.

1. After logging into your CITI Program account, click on the link Add Institutional Affiliation.
2. Type James Madison University in the search box.
3. Confirm you have selected the right institution and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
4. Answer the member information questions and enroll in the course(s).

Please Note: To transfer course credit between institutions, you will need to be affiliated with both institutions (your previous institution and JMU). When you are affiliated with both institutions, enroll in the courses that need to be transferred  You will need to enroll in the same stage of the course (Basic / Refresher) for a transfer to occur.
