James Madison University's (JMU) Biosafety Program aims to minimize risks associated with biological research and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and is the administrative office that supports the Institutional Biosafety Committee.

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is charged with responsibility for oversight of research and teaching activities using biological materials that entails a potential risk to humans, animals, plants, or the environment. This research includes, but is not necessarily limited to, studies involving recombinant DNA, infectious agents, and biological toxins.
