Why JMU?

I chose JMU because I wanted to go to a university far away from the bustling city where I can study in peace and not have a lot of distractions. Also, my brother came into JMU first and he told me that there are few Indonesians and he met a whole bunch of people from all over the world and this piqued my interests.

What's your favorite class?

My favorite class is PSYC 160: Lifespan Human Development. This is a class I took my first semester at JMU and I have applied many things I have learned from this class in my college life. My professor was Jay Hayden and she is just wonderful. She was very involved with us and she was careful not to cause discomfort whenever we touched on a topic that may be sensitive to some of the students. Professor Hayden has such a lively atmosphere surrounding her and this was why her class always brightened my day.

Besides studying, how do you occupy your time?

I usually go to the library and chat with friends. I have a group of friends who are always at the library and we even call ourselves the Carrier Studying Association because we are always at the Carrier Library either studying or just hanging out.

What clubs and activities are you involved with at JMU?

I am a part of the executive board of Chinese Student Association (CSA) as Public Relations Chair and International Student Association (ISA) as Social Chair. In CSA, I work on a lot of physical advertisements which means I make banners, flyers, pamphlets and even backdrops for photo booths. In ISA, I bridge other organizations to ISA and help with collaboration events.

What do you like best about JMU?

I love how large the campus is and the many resources they offer here such as learning centers that help with my classes and libraries with books that could either help with my research or entertain me. My favorite place is the OASIS which is in the Student Success Center. In the OASIS, I can relax in my own space to meditate, nap and detach myself from all the stress I have been enduring.

What is the one thing you wish you had known about JMU prior to arriving on campus?

I wish I had known how big this place is. As an international student, I didn’t get a chance to take a tour of the campus until after I was accepted. When I first arrived, one of the few things we received was a map of campus. I could not believe there are so many buildings here and some students must take the bus just to get to classes on the other side of campus. Until this day, there are many buildings on campus I have yet to enter and places I have yet to visit.
