If your student needs Summer Housing, housing is available through July 20, 2019 for students enrolled in classes.

The directions for moving out may look very different than they were for move-in. Below you'll find the driving directions to your respective hall. 

Bluestone and Lake Areas Driving Directions



Ashby, Converse, Gifford and Logan Halls

Use I-81 Exit 245

If you have been traveling northbound:

  • At the top of the ramp, turn left onto Port Republic Road.
  • Continue on Port Republic Road to the third traffic light (South Main Street) and turn right, staying in the right lane.
  • Travel on South Main Street for just over 2 blocks. Turn right into campus on Bluestone Drive. The parking area for the aforementioned halls will be your first left-hand turn after turning on campus.

If you have been traveling southbound: 

At the top of the ramp, turn right onto Port Republic Road.
  • Continue on Port Republic Road to the second traffic light (South Main Street) and turn right, staying in the right lane.
  • Travel on South Main Street for just over 2 blocks. Turn right into campus on Bluestone Drive. The parking area for the aforementioned halls will be your first left-hand turn after turning on campus.

From here, please consider the following:

  • Parking Services will continue to enforce all Fire Lanes and Handicap spaces throughout the week. It is never acceptable for drivers to park in these areas to move out for any length of time.
  • Parking on grass areas is permitted and encouraged.

Take I-81 to Exit 245.

  • Continue until you reach Eagle Hall.

  • Take your next right onto Bluestone Drive. 
  • Continue on Bluestone Drive to the first stop sign and turn left onto Champions Drive.
  • Continue until you reach Eagle Hall.

From here, please consider the following:

  • Continue until you reach Shorts Hall.

If you have been traveling southbound:

  • At the top of the ramp turn right onto Port Republic Road
  • Take your next right onto Bluestone Drive. 
  • Continue on Bluestone Drive to the first stop sign and turn left onto Champions Drive.
  • Continue until you reach Shorts Hall.

From here, please consider the following:

Hillside Area Driving Directions



Hillside, Bell and McGraw-Long Halls

Use I-81 Exit 247B.

Travel West on East Market Street, turning left onto Martin Luther King Jr. Way at the second traffic light.

Proceed along Martin Luther King Jr. Way through two more traffic lights, turning left into the C-4 parking lot just past the second traffic light. Continue towards your residence hall and park near the building, being careful to avoid obstructing the fire lane.

Hillside Hall: Parking will occur on the field in front of the hall (similar to move-in day). Access the field by turning left after proceeding up the service drive towards Bell & McGraw-Long Halls. Do not use the sidewalk near Hillside Hall to access the field. 

For everyone’s safety, we request that you follow a few basic instructions:

  1. Please do not bring your car to the loading area until you are ready to load for move-out.
  2. If you are moving out on Monday or Tuesday of finals week, please obtain a loading permit from Parking Services (located in the parking deck by the football stadium).
  3. On Wednesday & Thursday of finals week, families or other moving helpers should use nearby resident parking lots before/after loading occurs.
  4. Do not obstruct the fire lane in front of Bell and McGraw-Long Halls. Park along the edge to keep a path clear for traffic and emergency vehicles.
  5. Parking in the loading area is limited to 30 minutes, especially on Wednesday and Thursday when traffic is heavy.
  6. Once your car is loaded (if you are not leaving campus immediately), move your car to a nearby resident parking lot to allow other vehicles to load.
  7. If possible, bring a handcart or dolly to assist you with moving your belongings.
  8. Drive slowly and exercise caution with regard to pedestrians.
  9. Park in a way that allows other vehicles to pass easily.
  10. Do not move barricades, ropes, or directional signs.
  11. Do not park in handicap or service vehicle spaces.
  12. When loading is complete, exit the loading area so others may have access.

Skyline Area Driving Directions



Chandler, Chesapeake and Shenandoah Halls

Use I-81 Exit 247A Route 33 East.

Travel East on Route 33/East Market Street and turn right onto University Boulevard at the second traffic light.

Continue on University Boulevard through three traffic lights. Move to the left lane and PASS the Carrier Drive entrance to campus. Turn right at the service drive across from the Arboretum. Follow the service drive around to the front of the Skyline Area residence halls. You will be able to park temporarily in front of your hall on the grassy areas or the Festival Lawn.

For everyone’s safety, we request that you follow a few basic instructions:

  1. Please do not bring your car to the loading area until you are ready to load for move-out.
  2. If you are moving out on Monday or Tuesday of finals week, please obtain a loading permit from Parking Services (located in the parking deck by the football stadium).
  3. On Wednesday and Thursday of finals week, families or other moving helpers may park in the C-11 or C-12 lots across from the Festival until you are ready to load the vehicle.
  4. Always park in the grass and do not block or park on sidewalks or in fire lanes. Leave enough room for other vehicles.
  5. Do not park behind Chandler, Chesapeake, or Shenandoah. This area is a fire lane.
  6. Once your car is loaded (if you are not leaving campus immediately), move your car to a nearby resident parking lot to allow other vehicles to load.
  7. If possible, bring a handcart or dolly to assist you with moving your belongings.  Moving bins will be available for checkout from the RA office during posted office hours.
  8. Drive slowly and exercise caution with regard to pedestrians.
  9. Do not park in handicap or service vehicle spaces.
  10. Do not move barricades, ropes, or directional signs.
  11. When loading is complete, exit using the service drive between Chandler and Chesapeake.

Village Area Driving Directions



Dingledine and Huffman Halls

Use I-81 Exit 245 Port Republic Road.

If coming from the south, you will turn left at the light from the off-ramp and turn right at the JMU entrance sign on Bluestone Drive after going through one light on the bridge. If coming from the north, you will turn right at the light on to port republic, and then make another quick right at the next light on to Bluestone Drive. 

You will continue on Bluestone Drive and turn right at the first traffic light, then you will turn in to the R7 parking lot on your left. Proceed up the service drive entrance in front of Weaver Hall. Based on your hall location pull on to a grass area as you are able to park.

Dingledine Hall: Most vehicles should be trying to park on the grass area on the side of the Dingledine hall closest to Chappelear.

Huffman Hall: Residents may pull up close to the hall, but again park on a grassy area as you are able. Please park accordingly making sure not to block in other vehicles. Huffman Hall residents should not have any vehicles park behind Huffman in the loading zone. Vehicles parked behind Huffman will be subject to ticketing and towing if necessary.

  1. Please do not bring your vehicles in to the areas near your hall until you are ready to load it for move-out.
  2. Once your car is loaded, if you are not leaving campus immediately, please move your car to the R-1 lot, to allow other vehicles to load.

  4. Drive slowly and exercise caution with regard to pedestrians.
  5. Do not park in any fire lanes for any reason.
  6. Do not block or park on any sidewalks or service driveways.
  7. Do not move barricades, ropes, or directional signs.
  8. Follow cadet or JMU police officer instructions if they are directing you about where to specifically park near your hall.

Frederikson and Hanson Halls

Use I-81 Exit 245 Port Republic Road. 

If coming from the south, you will turn left at the light from the off-ramp and turn right at the JMU entrance sign on Bluestone Drive after going through one light on the bridge. If coming from the north, you will turn right at the light on to port republic, and then make another quick right at the next light on to Bluestone Drive. 

You will continue on Bluestone Drive through one light, and then you will turn to the right in to the loading zone next to Frederikson Hall, which is just past the gate system, which will be up all week starting Tuesday 4/30 at 8:00 am. You should then pull your vehicle on to the grass field in front of Hanson hall. Please park accordingly making sure not to block in other vehicles.

For everyone’s safety, we request that you follow a few basic instructions:

  1. Please do not bring your vehciles in to the Hanson field area until you are ready to load it for move-out.
  2. Once your car is loaded, if you are not leaving campus immediately, please move your car to the R-1 lot, to allow other vehicles to load.
  3. If possible, bring a handcart or dolly to assist you with moving your belongings. Hall staff will not provide these.
  4. Drive slowly and exercise caution with regard to pedestrians.
  5. Do not park in any fire lanes for any reason.
  6. Do not block or park on any sidewalks.
  7. Do not move barricades, ropes, or directional signs.

Garber and Ikenberry Halls

Use I-81 Exit 247 B on to Route 33.

If coming from the south or north, you will turn left at the traffic light for MLK Jr. Way after coming from the off-ramp.

You will continue on MLK Jr. Way Drive and turn left at the second traffic light, cross the railroad tracks, then turn right on to Duke Drive. Proceed down Duke Drive past D-Hub on your left, then make a left on to the Ikenberry service drive. Parking is tricky for these two halls, so most vehicles will end up having to park along the Ikenberry service drive, but if you can find a grass spot to park on it would be even better. Please park accordingly making sure not to block in other vehicles.

Please turn on your emergency flashers if parked along the service drive.

Please note: Parking services will not be ticketing vehicles who park in the pay by space lot next to D-Hub on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only during finals week.

Chappelear, Weaver and White Halls

Use I-81 Exit 245 Port Republic Road.

Driving Directions (Apartments on Grace)



Apartments on Grace

(For August 23 and 24)

In order to better manage traffic on Grace Street and in the unloading areas around the hall itself, we are asking residents to approach the move-in area from HIGH STREET (instead of Main Street) and report directly to the R-14 Parking Lot and not the hall itself.  Please follow the directions below:

 

Grace Street residents should use I-81 Exit 245

 

If you have been traveling northbound:

 

  • At the top of the ramp, turn left onto Port Republic Road.
  • Continue to the FOURTH traffic light. Approx 1 Mile. (note: after the third traffic light Port Republic Road becomes MARYLAND Ave.)
  • At the fourth light TURN RIGHT onto S. HIGH STREET.
  • Continue on S. High Street to the FIRST TRAFFIC light. Approx. 1/4 mile.
  • TURN RIGHT onto W. GRACE STREET.
  • In approximately 500 feet you will see the CHESAPEAKE AVE. on your LEFT. Turn here and follow the directions from the staff and police.

 

If you have been traveling SOUTHBOUND:

 

  • At the top of the ramp, turn right onto Port Republic Road.
  • Continue to the THIRD traffic light. Approx 1 Mile. (note: after the second traffic light Port Republic Road becomes MARYLAND Ave.)
  • At the third light TURN RIGHT onto S. HIGH STREET.
  • Continue on S. High Street to the FIRST TRAFFIC light. Approx. 1/4 mile.
  • TURN RIGHT onto W. GRACE STREET.
  • In approximately 500 feet you will see the CHESAPEAKE AVE. on your LEFT. Turn here and follow the directions from the staff and police.

 

If you are leaving from Hotel Madison:

 

  • Exit the parking date on Mason Street. (You will only be able to take a right-hand turn).
  • Turn right onto E Grace Street and continue on Grace through South Main (Route 11).
  • You will see the CHESAPEAKE AVE. on your LEFT. Turn here and follow the directions from the staff and police.

 

Vehicles will be given a placard and staged in the parking lot until unloading space opens up near the Apartments on Grace St. While unloading, someone MUST stay with the vehicle at all times.  Vehicles are given 30 minutes at the building to unload.

 

Once you have unloaded your vehicle, please follow the exit signs and make a RIGHT onto W. Grace Street and then a LEFT onto CHESAPEAKE AVE. You may park in the Chesapeake Avenue Parking Deck.
