Program Description

This three-creidt program provides an extraordinary opportunity to study one Museum Studies course while living in Washington, DC. Students will visit world-class museums and arts institutions while experiencing the exhibition, gallery and auction culture of the nation's capital, one of the globe's leading centers for the arts. Learning will go well beyond a traditional JMU classroom, since students will have daily on-site visits and guest lectures from local experts, many of them JMU Alums.

Students that successfully complete this Winter program will meet the requirements of a 3-credit elective in Museum Studies: ARTH 409: Topics in Museum Studies: The Future of Museums, or ARTH 394: Introduction to Museum Work. These electives can be used for the Museum Studies Concentration, or as a 400-level elective requirement in the Art History major or minor. Graduate students can take ARTH 590: Graduate Topics in Art History.

Daily we will visit the leading museums and cultural institutions of the capital. There will be some free time for students to explore Washington outside of class activities. The combination of studying, living, and traveling in this location will make this an unforgettable experience from academic, professional, and personal perspectives alike.

Location Description

This Museum Studies domestic study program takes place in central Washington, DC. There will be some free time for you to explore on your own.

Site visits will include: Smithsonian Museums, National Gallery of Art, Philips Collection, Dumbarton Oaks, National Zoo, Library of Congress, and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Accommodations

Accommodations will be provided for students through shared furnished rooms with internet access in a centrally-located venue, such as a hotel. Students will be in shared rooms.

Students will be allocated a weekly meal stipend that will cover approximately 5 meals per week, covering lunch on the 10 weekdays of the program.

Applicant Criteria

Applicants must have a GPA minimum of 2.0.

Open to all majors and class levels, including graduate students.
