Bergen, Oslo, Frederikshavn, Aalborg, Aarhus, Norway, Denmark

Program Description

Explore Norway and Denmark like a Viking! Follow the path of the original Vikings: Bike, rail, boat, and walk on a journey with us through the lands of Scandinavia. Then, write about your adventures, observations, and experiences. Students will have many opportunities to engage with each other and build community.

Students will have the option of taking either WRTC 301 Language Law and Ethics or WRTC 336 Writing Consultation, which are both small, seminar-style courses with meaningful interaction and experiential learning. Students will have the opportunity to work independently, in small groups, and with Norwegian and Danish nationals.

Location Description

Denmark is a constitutional democracy, we might catch a glimpse of the royal family, whose lineage dates back to the 10th century. Walk the grounds of the historical castles and churches that dot the Danish countryside. Join the throngs of cyclists that pedal throughout bike-friendly Copenhagen—a capital city where there are more bikes than people! Earn a free canal tour of the picture-perfect Copenhagen harbor by picking up trash. What an innovative idea for keeping the city clean and making the visitors happy!

Accommodations

Accommodations will include a mix of furnished spaces with internet access, kitchen, and laundry facilities. Students will likely be in shared double rooms, but we will strive to accommodate needs for private rooms on a case-by-case basis. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in homestays with families in the host culture or reside in college dormitory housing.

Students will be responsible for breakfast. We’ll eat lunch at restaurants as we move about in our daily activities. Fresh fruits and vegetables are popping in Denmark and Norway during the summer, as the weather is ideal for lush gardens. Have you tasted sweet strawberries or fresh peas that you picked yourself from the fields? Amazing baked breads and pastries are a staple of the Scandinavian diet. Feasting together as a social event is one of the keys to the sense of community that the Danes and Norwegians enjoy.

Additional Items to Consider

Most Norwegians and Danes speak English, so no additional foreign language experience is required.
