Summer in Reggio Calabria

Location

Reggio Calabria, Italy

Program Description

The JMU’s Summer Program in Reggio Calabria is a four-week program in which students who have completed Elementary Italian I can earn 6 credits by attending classes in language and culture. The prerequisites established by the JMU Dept. of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures will be followed for each course.

Students attend classes every day, M-F, at the University for Foreigners “Dante Alighieri”. Language classes are taught by the University for Foreigners’ professors. Courses in culture, literature, and upper level language courses are taught by the JMU professors, Giuliana Fazzion and Valentina Riso. If we have Int’l Business majors, business classes are taught by Prof. Faramarz Damanpour. Every weekend there is a cultural trip; there are at least 3 guided tours.

Location Description

This is a four-week program based in Reggio Calabria, at the Università per Stranieri Dante Alighieri. The program gives students the opportunity to earn JMU credits while living in Calabria, the region whose name means “land that produces beautiful things”.

Reggio Calabria is a beautiful location on the water in the famous Stretto di Messina which separates Italy from Sicily. The seafront that faces Sicily, defined as “the most beautiful kilometer in Italy”, has a breathtaking view of the volcano Etna. The people of Reggio Calabria are very hospitable and kind towards visitors and foreigners. The University is based in the downtown area of Reggio Calabria, a three-minute walking distance from the Sicily- facing seafront, defined as "the most beautiful kilometer in Italy" by the famous poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, with a breathtaking view of the volcano Etna.
