How does YOUR work change the world?
The broader impact of your work is just the answer to this question: How does your research benefit society? Join us to discover campus and community resources you can partner with to develop and demonstrate the broader impacts of your work.
When: November 17th, 2025, 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm
Where: The Union Ballroom
Registration: Registration requested. A lunch buffet will be served.
Why: The research and scholarship you do is important to making JMU an engaged university! JMU research has real-life impact on our local community, as well as national and international significance. Whether your work is in the sciences, arts, humanities, social sciences, or professional fields (or interdisciplinary or beyond) it matters-- it benefits society-- but figuring out how to demonstrate these broader impacts can be a challenge.
There are resources on campus and in our community you can partner with to develop and demonstrate these broader impacts, and this resource fair will help interested researchers connect with those resources. Furthermore, building up your community engagement and broader impacts portfolio will assist you with promotion, tenure, and grant applications.
Examples of Broader Impacts: Here are just a few questions you might ask as you think about broader impacts and community engagement:
- How does my work contribute to the local economy?
- How does my work impact various communities, especially disadvantaged communities?
- How does my research contribute to health, well-being, or sustainability?
- Is there a venue for engaging with members of the public who would want to learn about my research area?
- How does my research contribute to solving societal problems?
- Do my student researchers develop skills that would be in demand for internship opportunities?
- How does my work bring people from under-represented communities into my field?
- How does my research stimulate public discussion?
- How does my work produce benefits for the public?
- And more!
