Welcome to CMSS!

Dear CMSS Family-

We hope that this message finds you well. Unfortunately, during the last month our nation has experienced multiple horrific losses of life. From Turkey to Orlando to Baton Rouge to St. Paul to Dallas we are reminded of how quickly life can be lost and how each of us has a place in our world, nation, and at JMU. On behalf of our CMSS family we extend our most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victims in each of these tragedies.

We recognize that instances of hate, bias, and discrimination are deeply rooted in our society. Based on each of our social identities, we are impacted by these events in a multitude of ways. Many of us are experiencing conflicting emotions and are challenged daily in the areas we live, work, and how we practice faith. Please know that we recognize your pain and are with each of you in solidarity as we grieve and make meaning of the world in which we live. We recognize you. We value you. We support you.

For over 30 years students have called CMSS their home away from home. It is our goal to ensure that you feel safe and included not only in CMSS, but throughout our entire campus community. We recognize that a university is a microcosm of society and often we grapple with the same issues that exist in our larger society. We encourage you to share your perspectives, learn from each other and together, think critically about solutions to address issues related to identity.

Remember there are many university resources available to you as students. CMSS is open Monday-Thursday from 8am-5:30pm and Friday from 8am-noon. The Counseling Center: and the LGBTQ Education & Ally Program: are also available resources.

In preparation for your return to campus, DEEP Impact has planned a campus-wide dialogue "#TrendingNow" which will focus on the events of the summer on Wednesday, September 7th at 7pm in Madison Union Ballroom. We encourage you to join us as we come together as a community for dialogue, healing, support, and next steps. While we recognize that one dialogue will not suffice, we look forward to supporting students as they provide additional opportunities to support the communities we serve.

As we all strive to make meaning of these instances, please remember to take care of yourselves, take care of those around you, and be especially mindful to look after other members of our communities who might be hurting.
