The National Institutes of Health (NIH) fund a variety of research connected to health, primarily biomedical and behavioral research.  The Office of Research Development is happy to assist JMU faculty and staff with preparing NIH proposals.  We have built a resource toolkit to help you with the process.

First step: We recommend starting by writing a one-page Specific Aims document outlining your project and sending it to a program officer to identify the best funding opportunity for it.  To figure out which program officer to send it to, use the NIH RePORT Matchmaker tool.  Enter a brief description (abstract) of your project, select "Similar Program Officials", and the tool will identify program officers who oversee projects similar to yours.

Are you preparing an NIH proposal?  We offer personalized assistance, including developing checklists for your particular solicitation and a suggested timeline.  As time and staffing allows, we also can review proposal materials.  Let us know how we can assist via our request assistance form.  Your college-based Research Development Associate or Manager will follow up with you

Remember, always follow your NOFO.  If there is a conflict between requirements in the NOFO, the Application Guide, and these templates, the NOFO takes precedence, followed by the Application Guide.

Preliminaries

Not sure where to start?  Start here!  Covers: how to find the right NIH funding opportunity, receiving and linking eRA credentials, and accessing ASSIST to prepare proposals.

Resources by Grant Type

NIH proposals are organized by forms.  We have pages on the forms for each of the main proposal types:

  • Research Grants
  • Career Development Awards (coming soon!)
  • Training Grants (coming soon!)
  • Fellowships (coming soon!)

Looking for information on a specific form?  Try our forms page, which lists our resources organized by form (coming soon!).

NIH Resources
Are you a JMU PI who has successfully applied for NIH funding?  Consider signing up to mentor PIs preparing their first NIH proposal and/or sharing your research plan or similar.  Let us know at researchdevelopment@jmu.edu.
