Demolition of Cantrell Avenue Parking Deck FAQs

The Cantrell Avenue Parking Deck is being demolished to make way for a second academic building supporting the College of Health and Behavioral Studies.

The Cantrell Avenue Parking Deck will permanently close on Monday, August 17, 2026.

A total of 171 parking spaces will be removed as part of the demolition of the Cantrell Avenue Parking Deck, including 143 faculty/staff spaces, 14 service vehicle spaces and 9 Audiology and Speech-Language Clinics client spaces. ADA-accessible spaces on the top floor of the Cantrell Deck will remain available for the next month.

Levels 2 through 7 of the Grace Street Parking Deck (402 spaces) will be reallocated for faculty and staff parking. In addition, Level 5 of the Mason Street Parking Deck (243 spaces) will be reallocated for commuter student parking. See the next question for more information about these changes.

Levels 2 through 7 of the Grace Street Parking Deck will be reallocated for faculty and staff parking to reduce commuter student vehicle traffic near the busy pedestrian crossing between the Student Success Center and the recently reopened Carrier Library. This change enhances pedestrian safety in one of the campus's busiest pedestrian corridors, while also helping offset the reduction of faculty and staff parking resulting from the demolition of the Cantrell Avenue Parking Deck.

To help offset the loss of commuter parking on North Campus, approximately 250 additional student parking spaces will be created through the following projects:

  • R1 Lot – 102 gravel parking spaces will be created on the former site of Mauck Stadium, accessible through the south end of R1 Lot.
  • R7 Lot – 32 gravel parking spaces will be created in a new lot adjacent to Mauck Stadium. The lot will be accessed from Eastover Drive.
  • C6 Lot – Approximately 16 gravel parking spaces will be created in a new lot at the corner of South Main Street and West Grace Street. The lot will be accessed from Walnut Lane.
  • Chesapeake Avenue Parking Deck – Approximately 32 additional parking spaces will be created through reconfiguration.
  • R20 Lot – Approximately 22 additional gravel parking spaces will be created through expansion.
Additional spaces will become available for the spring semester and communicated to the campus community.

Updated parking maps are available on the Parking and Transit Services website. The current parking map can be viewed here: https://www.jmu.edu/parking/_files/parkingmap.pdf.

No. Existing permit types will remain the same. Commuter permit holders will continue to park in designated commuter parking areas, including Level 5 of the Mason Street Parking Deck. Faculty and staff permit holders will continue to park in faculty/staff areas, including Levels 2 through 7 of the Grace Street Parking Deck. All other parking restrictions will remain unchanged.

No. Parking permit fees for students, faculty, and staff will remain unchanged for the seventh consecutive year.

Although ADA-accessible parking in the Cantrell Avenue Parking Deck will be removed by the end of September, alternate ADA parking will be added to serve the Wine-Price Building. ADA-accessible parking will continue to be available on Levels 2 and 3 of the Grace Street Parking Deck, Levels 2 through 4 of the Mason Street Parking Deck, and the surface lot immediately adjacent to the Health Center.

Clients receiving services at the Audiology and Speech-Language Clinics will park in designated spaces on the ground level of the Grace Street Parking Deck.

The vehicular exit from the Grace Street Parking Deck onto Martin Luther King Jr. Way is expected to close when construction begins in Spring 2027. The Grace Street Parking Deck will continue to be accessible from East Grace Street. Additional traffic and pedestrian impacts will be communicated as construction schedules are finalized.

JMU will continue to provide fare-free bus service through its partnership with the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation (HDPT). Bus service is available throughout campus and to and from many off-campus apartment communities. Walking, biking, and carpooling also remain viable transportation options for many members of the university community.
