What kinds of rooms are available?

  • Double Rooms: Most available rooms for first year students are double rooms, so you will most likely have a roommate.
  • Single Rooms: Most single rooms are reserved for students with approved housing accommodations through the Office of Disability Services. There may be a small number of single rooms available during Online Room Selection.
  • Triple Rooms: There are 18 standard triple rooms available in Chandler, Chesapeake, Hillside, and Wayland Halls. These rooms are designed for three residents, so they are larger than typical double rooms. There also may be some temporary triple rooms (three students assigned to a double occupancy room) available in Chandler and Chesapeake Halls. These rooms will be marked to differentiate them from the standard triple rooms.

Roommate Information

You will only be able to participate in Online Room Selection if you have signed a Housing Contract. If you want to live with someone and they don’t have a signed Housing Contract, they will need to sign their contract through the Online Housing System. You must have a signed Housing Contract by July 17 at 12 PM to be eligible for Online Room Selection. You also must complete Roommate Selection by July 17 at 12 PM.

The Online Housing System will be open on April 1 for you to begin searching and selecting roommates. You will need to create a Roommate Group before you can search for roommates.

There are two ways you can search for people:

1. You can search for people who have similar answers to the Lifestyle Questions by selecting Browse Matching from the Roommate Group Management page. This will bring up roommates who answered similarly to you. The higher the percentage, the closer your answers were on the Lifestyle Questions.

2. You can search for people based on what they have written in their profiles. Enter a word that you’d like to be in other profiles, and the Online Housing System will return all students with that word. You can then read whole profiles and see how similar others’ answers are to yours on the Lifestyle Questions.

If you find someone you think could be a good fit for you as a roommate, you can send them a message through the Online Housing System that will be sent to their JMU email. If you determine that you want to live together, you will need to be in a Roommate Group with them to pull them into a room or have them pull you into a room.

I already know who I want to live with. How do we make sure that we pick a room together?

One of you will have to create a Roommate Group within the Online Housing System. This will make them the group leader. When someone creates a Roommate Group, they come up with a group name and password that should be shared with all roommate(s). Once the group leader has shared the group name and password with all roommate(s), those individual(s) need to log into the Online Housing System to join the group. Interested roommate(s) must join the group with the group name and password in order to be pulled into a room when someone from the group picks a room.

PLEASE NOTE: You cannot be in more than one Roommate Group, and you cannot create a new Roommate Group if you are already in one. You will have to leave your original Roommate Group in order to join or create a new Roommate Group.

What can the leader of a Roommate Group do?

The leader is the person responsible for creating the group name and password, as well as sharing it with desired roommate(s). The leader of the Roommate Group can also:

  • Message a potential roommate. All messages are sent to a student’s JMU email.
  • Delete member(s) from the group. When someone is deleted from the group, they will receive an email saying that they are no longer in the group.
  • Delete the whole group, which means that the former members will not be able to select a room together and the group will no longer exist.
  • Select a room on behalf of the whole group - the Group Leader should do this only if they have the lowest room selection number of all the group members.
  • The Group Leader also is sent an email when someone new joins their group.

What can a member of Roommate Group do?

A member is anyone who has joined a Roommate Group by entering the group name and password. A group member can:

  • Message any other group members. All messages are sent to a student’s JMU email.
  • Delete themselves from the group.
  • Select a room on behalf of the whole group – the group member with the earliest Room Selection Timeslot of all the members should do the room selection.

Can only the Roommate Group leader select a room?

No. Any member of the Roommate Group can select a room and pull in everyone in the group. It is suggested that the group member with the Earliest Room Selection Timeslot be in charge of completing Online Room Selection for all group members.

Room Selection Timeslot

As long as you have signed a Housing Contract by July 17 at 12PM, you will be assigned a Room Selection Timeslot, which is the date and time you can log into the Online Housing System and select your room.

How will my Room Selection Timeslot be assigned to me?

Room Selection Timeslots are assigned based on the date you paid your Admissions Deposit.

When will I get my Room Selection Timeslot?

Room Selection Timeslots will be sent via your Dukes email by 5PM on July 17.

I have a friend (or a group of friends) that I want to live with. Whose Room Selection Timeslot should we use to pick a room?

The general rule is the earlier the Room Selection Timeslot, the more building and room options will be available. So, if you are living with someone, it makes sense that the person with the earliest Room Selection Timeslot logs in to select a room for next year.

I'm not available to log into the Online Housing System at my appointment time based on my Room Selection Timeslot. Can someone else pick a bedspace for me?

Room Selection Timeslots are non-transferable. Therefore, if you are unable to access the Online Housing System during your assigned time, you can submit a Proxy Form and the Office of Residence Life can pick a space during your Selection Timeslot on your behalf. Forms will be available online on July 17.

I missed my Timeslot! Can I still go through Online Room Selection?

You can log into Online Room Selection beginning at your Room Selection Timeslot. You can continue logging into the system until you have chosen a bedspace or the system closes.

Special Groups

I have an air-conditioning accommodation on file with the Office of Disability Services. Do I have to do anything different for Online Room Selection?

The Online Room Selection process will be organized such that as long as you submit your Housing Accommodation Form by the deadline of June 19 and are approved for air conditioning, you will be able to select a space in an air conditioned building. You will not have to do anything additional to make sure that you pick an air-conditioned space.

I have a housing accommodation on file with the Office of Disability Services. Do I have to do anything different for Online Room Selection?

If you have a housing accommodation such as a single room or reduced occupancy bathroom, you will be contacted by the Office of Residence Life by the end of June with information about selecting or being assigned to a room for next year.

I have been accepted into a Residential Learning Community (RLC). Do I need to go through Online Room Selection?

Yes. Students in Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) will be the only students able to select a room in the designated RLC rooms across campus. If you are in a RLC, you will receive a Room Selection Timeslot and be able to select a room in your designated RLC community.

Please note: If you are applying for the Visual and Performing Arts RLC, your deadline to select a roommate is May 15, 2020. This is to ensure that the appropriate number of students are accepting into this RLC. If you are admitted into this RLC, any roommates selected after May 15 are not guaranteed.

I am a member of the Honors program. Do I need to go through Online Room Selection?

Yes. Students in the Honors program who opt to live in the Honors Living and Learning Center in Shenandoah Hall will be the only students able to select a room in the designated Honors rooms in Shenandoah. If you are one of these Honors students, you will receive a Room Selection Timeslot and will be able to select a room in the Honors Living and Learning Center in Shenandoah Hall.

Completing Online Room Selection

On the date and time of your Room Selection Timeslot, you will be able to log into the Online Housing System, go into Room Selection and select an available room. Information about each building, including the move-in date and time(s) for that building and building layout information, will be listed when you go into Room Selection in the Online Housing System. As long as you are in a Roommate Group with your roommate(s), you will be able to pull your roommate(s) into a room with you.

Please note that you will only be able to select a room or a bedspace during First Year Online Room Selection. First Year students will not be able to select or fill an entire suite.

It is very important to note that once you select a room, this is final and will be your room assignment for the 2020-2021 academic year. You will not be able to log in and change this assignment. In addition, your move-in date and time will be final as well. Please ensure that you are selecting a building and room that match your desired move-in date and time.
