Scholarship Overview

The Witherspoon Scholarship was created by Mr. and Mrs. Witherspoon to recognize their daugthers, Laura Witherspoon ('12) and Catherine Witherspoon ('17) both of whom were Honors College students. To be named a Witershpoon Family Scholar, recipients must be in good academic standing, fall within Track I or Track II of the Honors College, and be engaged in a field of study. Students will only be eligible at the conclusion of their first or second year of study at JMU.

Students must demonstrate a strong interest and desire to study within the field of research or scholarly activity proposed by a faculty member. Scholarship funds are intended to support additional scholarly activity on this project with the faculty mentor.

Awards will rotate annually among student recipients in different colleges within the university. A three-year period is required before awards can be made again to students engaged in research or scholarly activity in a particular college. The appointment of the Witherspoon Family scholars will be made in a manner determined by the Dean of the Honors College.
