Program Description

This immersive, experience-based study abroad program offers students the unique opportunity to volunteer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—one of the official U.S. host cities. Open to every JMU student, this program provides hands-on, real-world exposure to the operations of a mega sport event on a global scale.

While on site, students will contribute as official volunteers with tournament organizing committees, gaining behind-the-scenes access to areas such as event operations, fan engagement, hospitality services, and media relations. Students will also attend group excursions, including tours of stadium facilities, meetings with event professionals, and cultural and historical site visits around Philadelphia to deepen their understanding of sport event hosting and urban tourism.

Prior to departure, students will participate in several mandatory class meetings (virtual and/or in-person) to prepare for the experience. These sessions will cover international sport management, event operations, intercultural communication, and logistical expectations. Upon returning, students will be required to attend a debriefing session and submit a reflective assignment connecting their field experience to course concepts.

This program is ideal for students seeking to build a career in sport management, event planning, or international business, and offers a rare chance to be part of one of the largest global sporting events in history—right here in the U.S.
