Program Description
Get ready to explore the vibrant wonders of Costa Rica and fully immerse yourself in the spirit of Pura Vida. Through Costa Rica FLOW: VIDA, students will explore the lifestyle and dietary practices of indigenous and culturally diverse communities that promote longevity and lifelong well-being. The program offers hands-on experiences with the country’s rich agricultural and culinary traditions— including farm tours, regional cooking classes, and opportunities to learn the secrets of healthy aging from Nicoya’s renowned centenarians. Students will also engage in hikes, mindfulness practices, and water excursions that foster a deep connection with Costa Rica’s breathtaking natural beauty.
Students will explore nutrition, health, and well-being through a combination of lectures, guest speakers, readings, and videos. These concepts will come to life through immersive experiences, such as farm tours, fieldwork, and authentic cooking classes, which highlight the agricultural and culinary traditions of Costa Rica. Additional activities like walking, hiking, meditation, and conservation will deepen students’ understanding of how lifestyle and environment shape lifelong wellness. The courses will also provide space for reflection on the meaningful connections between academic theories and lived experiences.

La Fortuna
Nestled at the base of the majestic Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna is known for its lush rainforests, natural hot springs, and stunning waterfalls. This region offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, all surrounded by breathtaking tropical scenery.
Nicoya
Nicoya offers a deep connection to traditional Costa Rican life, including plant-based diets, strong community ties, and natural physical activity. Visitors can learn from centenarians, explore rural farming communities, and be immersed in the cultural and dietary practices that promote longevity.
Tamarindo
Tamarindo is a lively coastal town known for its beautiful beaches, world-class surfing, and vibrant local culture. Its laid-back, Pura Vida vibe makes it an ideal place to unwind and connect with nature.

Accommodations
Hotels, Motels, and Eco-Lodges will be the primary housing accommodations that will be offered. Students will be in shared double rooms and laundry services can be made available upon request. All transportation will be provided.
All meals will be provided as part of the program. Meals are covered in the student fee.
Additional Items to Consider
Outlets and voltage are the same as in North America.
Students will be required to bring cell phones and laptops for the trip.
Students will be sharing hotel rooms and hotel accommodations.
We recommend speaking to healthcare providers about additional vaccinations (such as Malaria) based on the student's health status and individual conditions.
Pre-departure Coursework: Online Readings, Videos, and Pre-Recorded Lectures
Applicant Criteria
Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7
Open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students in the Dietetics program.
Some Spanish is recommended, although not required.
For students enrolling in Nutr 394, students must have successfully completed Nutr 340.
For students taking Nutr 690, they must be enrolled and in good standing in the Applied Nutrition Graduate Program.
