Total and Normalized Water Use
JMU purchases water from the City of Harrisonburg to be used on campus for a variety of uses: plumbing, cooking, cleaning, irrigation, cooling tower make-up water, etc. Water usage had increased gradually since fiscal year 2014 peaking in 2017 but holding steady subsequently through 2019. The abrupt decline in water usage in fiscal years 2020 and 2021 were largely due the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that saw a reduction in water demand across campus. Water usage levels are virtually back to pre-pandemic levels.
