Commuting

JMU regularly conducts surveys to assess the commuting habits of the campus community in regards to sustainability. Surveys are conducted and complied by the transportation department using the Qualtrics survey tool and also by the Office of Institutional Research (OIR).

Student Commuting

A plurality of students (37%) which include those who live on campus, walk to and from their destination on campus when commuting . 32% of students  use automobile (drive alone) for commuting to and from campus. Public bus followed with 18%. Carpool accounted for 6%, biking 1% while other modes of transportation accounted for 6%. 

Staff Commuting

Faculty and staff overwhelmingly favored automobile with 83% of total commuting share. Walking accounted for 9%, carpool 4%, biking 3% and public bus 1%.
