The Center for Faculty Innovation takes a holistic and comprehensive approach supporting faculty as authentic, whole human beings. We align with the JMU definitions and models of Health and Well-being:

"JMU defines well-being as the optimal and dynamic state that allows us to flourish now and in the future."

At the CFI, we recognize that faculty cannot thrive if they are not okay. Using trauma-informed and inclusive approaches to well-being, we support faculty self-care, advocate for institutional structures and cultures that support care, and empower communities of care. We strive to collaboratively create action-oriented programming that is responsive, relevant to faculty needs and inclusive of multiple voices.

Because belonging is essential to care, the Well-being Area supports faculty communities and other programs that affirm interdependence and foster connection and collaboration. We encourage faculty to advocate for themselves, each other, and the communities we inhabit.

Area Outcomes

The Well-being Area supports progress toward:

  1. Collaboratively shaping shared understandings and models of well-being that are inclusive, equitable, responsive, and care-centered; that embrace faculty as whole people; and that make space for both self-determination of well-being goals and resources, and collective responsibility for well-being
  2. Advocating for institutional structures and cultures that support faculty well-being and thriving; contributing to university priorities around well-being, including participation in the Health-Promoting Campus Network
  3. Practicing and promoting the integration of holistic faculty well-being as part of teaching, scholarship, service, and other personal and career aspirations
  4. Empowering communities of care and affirming the interdependence of faculty well-being and the well-being of students, staff, leadership, and other community members
  5. Contributing to larger scholarly and professional conversations about well-being
