The CFI offers individual, group, and departmental consultations about career planning, organizational development, scholarship, and teaching. All interactions, discussions, and/or data are confidential.

Individual and small group consultations are available to faculty on a wide variety of topics related to faculty success and development. Consultants work with faculty through their questions and provide referrals to other resources on and off campus as needed.

We can also provide tailored departmental consultations for units and programs to meet disciplinary or departmental needs.

Individual Consultations
Career Consultations

Career consultations are personalized and designed to connect faculty—individually or in small groups—to resources and support for professional goal setting and career planning. Regardless of rank, level of experience, or area of interest or need, faculty will be matched with members of the JMU community who have knowledge and expertise in helping address faculty professional development.

Scholarship Consultations

The Scholarship consultations connect faculty to the on-campus resources necessary to advance scholarship projects and agendas. Regardless of the stage of a scholarly process—envisioning, research design, drafting manuscripts, revising/editing a manuscript, celebrating success—participants will be matched with people on campus (e.g. statisticians, librarians, grant experts, methodologists) who will help toward advancing needs and agendas.

Teaching Consultations

We collaborate with instructors in a variety of areas, such as designing a course, developing learning objectives, assessing student learning, actively engaging students, managing a large class, designing effective assignments, creating rubrics, and reviewing course evaluations. As partners in the consultation process, the CFI consultant and faculty member(s) work through the teaching or learning question with assistance from evidence-based resources and their collective expertise.

Wellness and Well-being Consultations

Wellness and Well-being consultations are focused on supporting faculty in matters related to wellness and well-being in all areas of their professional lives. We welcome conversations related to self-care, building communities of care, managing time, inclusive wellness and well-being, identifying barriers to well-being, accessing resources for well-being, and more. Please note: this space is for conversations with fellow faculty who are invested in wellness and well-being for informational and community-building purposes only; wellness and well-being consultants are not acting in the capacity of medical or mental health professionals, and cannot offer medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, or counseling or other services. To access resources around those needs, please consult with another resource, such as the Employee Assistance Program.

Departmental Consultations

The CFI provides on-demand professional development opportunities for academic units and programs. Unlike the CFI’s general workshops and roundtables, which are targeted to all instructional faculty, these targeted initiatives allow our CFI faculty to tailor outcomes to meet disciplinary or departmental needs.
