Entrepreneurship and Leadership in the Arts and Design Online Certificate

At the intersection between the arts and entrepreneurship, the CVPA Entrepreneurship and Leadership in the Arts and Design Online Certificate equips students with the entrepreneurial acumen and ingenuity needed to turn their artistic and design visions into successful ventures.

Arts entrepreneurship and leadership are about creating new ventures or initiatives that fill gaps in the cultural landscape, experiment with new business models, or engage with audiences in novel ways. It often involves elements of creativity, innovation, risk-taking, and adaptability, as practitioners navigate the complexities of the arts market and explore alternative approaches to arts funding, distribution, and engagement. 

This certificate, the only program of its kind in Virginia available entirely online, is designed to assist students in harnessing their creative abilities, potentially enhancing their employment prospects, boosting their income, and equipping them for meaningful and ethical participation in their communities.

After completing the requirements for the CVPA online graduate certificate, graduates will:

  • Build comprehensive business plans for arts-related ventures, including creative and financial elements.
  • Identify opportunities and understand the market dynamics in the arts sector, enabling them to make informed business decisions.
  • Implement marketing strategies specifically tailored for arts organizations, including branding, audience engagement, and promotional techniques.

Requirements

Required Courses: 12 Credit Hours

  1. ARTE 520 - Leadership and Community Engagement in the Arts and Design (3 credits)
  2. ARTE 530 - Business and Marketing in the Arts and Design (3 credits)
  3. ARTE 620 - Ethics and Law in the Arts and Design (3 credits)
  4. ARTE 720 - Arts Integration: Interdisciplinary Project Creation (3 credits)

To be considered for program admission, applicants must submit the following:

  • Graduate School standard application fee ($60).
  • A current resume.
  • One letter of recommendation submitted directly by the recommender.
  • A two-to-three-page essay explaining why you are pursuing this graduate certificate.
