Application Deadline

The application will open August 1. January 19 is the deadline to be guaranteed consideration.

Program Begins



Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions should be uploaded with your electronic application and may be used for departmental admission review purposes. If offered admission, you will be directed and required to submit to the JMU Graduate School an official transcript from any institution from which a degree has been awarded to finalize your admission. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent to JMU directly from the issuing institution.

Required by Program
  • An artist statement of 500 words or less explaining your principle ideas and motivation engaged in the artwork submitted in your portfolio
  • Brief statement of purpose of 500 words or less explaining why you wish to study studio art at the graduate level
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A portfolio of between 10 to 15 items submitted online via School Slideroom within the application
  • In addition to the general admission requirements, the prosepctive graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts program must have an undergraduate degree with a minimum of 33 credit hours in studio art and 9 credit hours in art history. The art history hours must include 6 hours surveying the history of Western art and 3 hours in upper-level art history.
