First Year Advising at JMU
Our First-Year Advisors are dedicated to helping students successfully transition from high school to college. They provide guidance as students set academic goals, explore their interests, and learn how to navigate university life.
First-Year students are assigned a First-Year Advisor when they complete their Orientation reservation and declare a major in the New Student Checklist. Incoming students can view more information in their New Student Checklist about the date their advisor will contact them and virtual group advising. With over 95 advisors representing a wide range of majors and programs, JMU ensures every student has the support they need. First-Year Advisors work with students from the summer before their first semester through mid-February, when students officially transition to their major advisor.
