All incoming first-year students enroll on June 17th provided they have finished the “Orientation Reservation & Declaring a Major” step in their One Book Checklist. We encourage you to have your student put this date in their calendar, phone, or similar so they don’t forget it!
An enrollment appointment is the date and time that a student can begin to enroll in classes. As mentioned, students can begin to enroll in classes on June 17th. The time on this day students can enroll in classes will be posted on June 6th.
Yes! Your student will enroll on their own using the MyMadison Student Center.
That is alright! We encourage your student to enroll as soon as they can after that date/time.
Enrollment will remain open this summer until July 17th at 11:59pm. Enrollment will reopen on August 1st at 8am. During the first part of the summer (June 17-July 17) enrollment is only open for incoming students. Once enrollment reopens on August 1st, it will be open for any JMU student.
Tools such as the Prepare for Class Enrollment modules, the Enrollment Worksheets by Major and the MyMadison enrollment tutorials are great resources to assist your student. Your student can also make a virtual appointment to meet with a MAP during the summer.
Please note: meetings during the afternoons of summer orientation have more limited availability.
We get this question all the time. Your student should contact the institution they took the class through (likely a community college) to learn how to send in their official transcript to JMU. Often this involves sending the official transcript in by mail or electronically. All incoming JMU students should select JMU Office of Admissions as the destination for their transcripts. See more information.
Your student can absolutely wait until all final grades are posted to send in their official transcripts. If they are bringing in a lot of transfer credit, they may choose to send their official transcript more than once, which is up to each individual student.
If your student is bringing in an Associate’s degree, please be aware that your student should wait until there degree is conferred on their transcript to send it to JMU. This sometimes does not happen until August, so it can be important to wait until all information is on the transcript to send it to JMU. Students can use transferology in the interim to see how their classes will transfer to anticipate credit.
These scores can be sent to JMU once they are published. We recommend sending them all at once so you only have to pay once.
In the interim, your student should talk to their advisor and review their enrollment worksheet when considering possible earned credit/enrollment.
JMU saves 1,000’s of seats for incoming students. We are committed to making sure that your student is able to enroll in the classes they need their first semester in order to graduate on time. The sections available may not be at the ideal time or day of the week, but by the time the summer is over, they should be able to enroll in the class. If they cannot find an open section after enrollment opens on June 17, they should contact their first year advisor for advice to move forward.
