Kate came to JMU in March of 1998 as an academic and career advisor in what became Career and Academic Planning. She served as a first-year advisor for undeclared students, in addition to working with international, transfer and probation/suspended students. In 2007, Kate transitioned to a new position working with potential transfer students in what is now University Advising. Her primary focus is on students at Blue Ridge, Lord Fairfax and Piedmont Virginia Community Colleges, but she also works with students at other VCCS schools, as well as with students who wish to transfer from 4-year and out-of-state community colleges. Before coming to JMU, Kate worked at Northern Virginia Community College in the Counseling Center, the Tutoring Center and finally as an ESL teacher. She has given presentations related to advising and transfer student success at the annual and regional conferences of NACADA, the National Institute for Transfer Student Success, and TYFY: Two Year First Year.
