Application Deadline

Application opens on October 1, 2025, and closes on October 31, 2025, at 11:59 PM. 

Eligibility
  • First-year or new transfer student (started at JMU Fall 2025)
  • In good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.0)
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at JMU at the time of application, and in the spring 2026 semester
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
Benefits

Students will gain essential research skills while being involved in a faculty mentorship. Along with these, students will be paid $1,000 stipend for their work in the program.

Student Expectation
  • Complete hiring paperwork prior to joining the program. This year, hiring will take place in the first two weeks of December. Students unable to provide all required documents prior to leaving for winter break risk being excluded from the program.
  • Starting in the first week of classes of the spring semester of 2026, students are expected to work an average of 5 hours per week for 16 weeks on their project under the supervision of a FYRE mentor. Specific working hours will be negotiated between faculty mentors and student researchers.
  • Complete all program assessment measures as assigned and participate in the FYRE Symposium in the Fall 2026.
  • Complete the online self-guided Fundamentals of Research Skills training program.
Application

In the application form, you will review the list of available research projects and select up to three you might like to be involved in. If a faculty member who has submitted a project recommended you to apply, choose their project as your first choice. Complete the application form below.
