This instructional toolkit provides a scaffolded set of interprofessional (IPE) and interdisciplinary (IDE) learning activities designed to build learners’ capacity to collaborate across professions and integrate knowledge across disciplines to address complex, real-world challenges.

  • Structured across three levels—Knowledge & Awareness, Practice & Application, and Integration & Collaboration— the activities support the progressive development of collaborative competencies.
  • All activities are grounded in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies framework, with the primary competency indicated in parentheses next to each activity.
  • Most activities are adaptable for both IPE and IDE contexts, with minor modifications as needed.
  • Instructors are encouraged to select and sequence activities based on learner readiness and learning goals—beginning with reflective and role-exploration exercises, progressing to case-based, dialogue-driven, and team-based learning, and advancing to simulations, community-engaged projects, and complex interdisciplinary problem-solving.

Developed and curated by the CHBS IPE and IDE Council, this toolkit is an evolving resource that will continue to grow with new activities and materials. The toolkit was developed by the CHBS IPE and IDE Council to support educators in designing learning experiences that foster collaboration, communication, ethical practice, and teamwork across professions and disciplines. Faculty are encouraged to share activities they have developed or adapted by contacting CHBS.IPE.IDE@jmu.edu.
