James Madison University intends “to be the national model of the engaged university; engaged with ideas and the world.”   Engaged scholarship is one way to actualize this vision. Engaged scholarship holds the potential to transform the researcher and the world around her/him.  A community of scholars gathered together to explore their interests in engaged scholarship projects and how they connected with their teaching, scholarship, and service work.   This group explored examples of engaged scholarship and also brainstorm or advance an engaged scholarship project.

Faculty participants progressed toward these program outcomes:

  • Increasing  awareness of types of engaged scholarship
  • Advancing an engaged scholarship project
  • Adding to the campus dialogue on engaged scholarship at JMU.
