Sade Bowers is the Special Advisor for Health Promoting Campus Initiatives at James Madison University. A JMU Health Sciences alumna with a background in public health, she supports university and community-wide efforts to advance well-being of people, places and the planet through implementation of the Okanagan Charter.
A significant component of her role involves fostering collaboration across sectors and communities. Guided by the Okanagan Charter's call to lead health promotion action and collaboration locally and globally, Sade works with community and higher education partners to advance collective approaches to health and well-being. She serves as co-chair for the JMU President's Council on Health and Well-Being and supports the Harrisonburg Healthy Community Collaborative as well as the Harrisonburg Safety Net Coalition. Additionally, Sade represents the university within the U.S. Health Promoting Campuses Network and engages with colleagues across the international Health Promoting Universities and Colleges movement to share best practices, learn from emerging research, and contribute to a systems-based approach to well-being.
Prior to joining JMU, Sade earned her Master of Public Health from Virginia Tech and started her career with the Central Shenandoah Health District, where she served as a community coordinator for population health efforts. This experience continues to inform her approach to health promotion, emphasizing prevention, community connection, and the understanding that individual well-being is shaped by the settings in which people live, learn, work, and connect.
Outside of work, Sade enjoys life in Staunton, VA with her husband, son, and dog. She is energized by time spent celebrating birthdays, listening to live music, admiring nature, and connecting with her community.
