Isolation and Quarantine FAQs

Students living on campus
  • You must isolate for 5 days (regardless of vaccine status). Day 0 is the first day of symptoms or the date of the day of the positive test if you do not have symptoms. You must not attend class in-person during these 5 days.
  • You may remain in your residence hall room for your 5-day isolation; however, you may want to consider going home where you will likely be more comfortable.
  • If you remain on campus, you must remain in your room during your 5-day isolation except when using the bathroom or picking up food.
  • You must wear your mask at all times, except when sleeping.
  • When using the bathroom, you must wear your mask except when brushing your teeth and showering. Bathroom trips should be as brief as possible.
  • You cannot use a sit-down dining facility during your isolation.
  • Contact Dining Services at (540) 568-6751 or email dining@jmu.edu to arrange food to-go. You may also use the robots and other delivery options.
  • After 5 days, you may return to classes in-person if you are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and your other symptoms have improved. You must wear a mask at all times for the following 5 days.

If you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Received your second vaccine shot of either Moderna less than 6 months ago, Pfizer less than 5 months ago or single vaccine shot of J&J less than 2 months ago OR
  • You have already received your COVID booster shot OR
  • You had a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the past 90 days

Then follow these directions:

  • You may continue to reside in your on-campus room, attend classes in-person and utilize all dining facilities. You must wear a mask for 10 days when around others (the date of last close contact is considered day 0).
  • You must wear a mask in your bedroom when you are around your roommate, except when sleeping.
  • You should closely monitor your health and get tested if you become symptomatic.

If you are unvaccinated or you received your second vaccine shot of Moderna MORE than 6 months ago or Pfizer MORE than 5 months ago or J&J MORE than 2 months ago and have not yet received a booster:

  • You must quarantine for 5 days (the date of last close contact is considered day 0.)  You must not attend class in-person during these 5 days.
  • If you roommate is positive, you must remain in quarantine during their isolation period. Your quarantine does not start until your roommate’s isolation ends.
  • You may remain in your residence hall room for the length of your roommate's isolation and your additional 5-day quarantine; however, you may want to consider going home where you will likely be more comfortable.
  • If you remain on campus, you must remain in your room during your 5-day quarantine except when using the bathroom or picking up food.
  • You must wear your mask at all times, except when sleeping.
  • When using the bathroom, you must wear your mask except when brushing your teeth and showering. Bathroom trips should be as brief as possible.
  • You cannot use a sit-down dining facility during your quarantine.
  • Grab and Go food can be picked up at Jemmy's Corner Market in E-Hall or in the conference room behind Steak and Shake on the first floor of D-Hall. Both have an outside entrance that you should use. You may also use the robots and other delivery options.
  • After 5 days, you should get tested for COVID.
  • If your test is negative, you may return to classes in-person. You must wear a mask at all times for the following 5 days.
  • If your test is positive, you should follow the instructions for isolation above. Day 0 is the first day of symptoms or the date of the day of the positive test if you do not have symptoms.
