The UHC Volunteer Program offers students opportunities to learn the value of being part of a healthcare team. This is not a shadowing opportunity. Health majors volunteer alongside UHC staff members, learning various roles of the healthcare team. Opportunities include three different areas of the Health Center:

  • Clinical areas
    • Assist staff with patient care that includes taking a brief health history, taking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, and temperature) and keeping exam rooms clean and stocked.
    • Requires CNA/EMT/MA training prior to applying
  • Front Office areas
    • Greet students as they enter the Health Center.
    • Involves good communication and customer service skills
    • Assist transporting lab specimens from various clinics to the lab for continuity of care.
    • No previous experience or training is required.
  • Lab area
    • Maintain clean linens and instruments for assigned clinics.
    • Assist lab staff with running in-house labs.
    • No previous experience or training is required.

We accept applications each semester as needed. Qualified applicants are interviewed and selected after registration. A major in a health-related field is required as well as completion of 2 semesters at JMU.

New volunteers begin their mandatory training each semester before classes begin, with an extensive online training course, as well as on-site training.

Applications for Fall 2021 will no longer be accepted. Check back in the fall semester for information on volunteer opportunities for Spring 2022.
