Responsibilities
- Oversees the humane care and use of research animals in compliance with federal and institutional standards.
- Manages day-to-day operations of the vivarium and ensures adherence to Animal Welfare Regulations and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
- Provides training to faculty, staff, and students on proper animal handling and research techniques.
- Serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and supports the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
- Coordinates laboratory safety efforts with Risk Management and promotes a culture of safety across research environments.

Background
Mike received a Bachelor of Science from Ferrum College.
Mike came to James Madison University in December of 2013. Mike is a certified Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Mike has 9 years of experience in pharmaceutical research at a contract research organization (CRO) prior to coming to JMU. He also has several poster publications in pharmaceutical research involving developmental and reproductive toxicology (Dart) and neurobehavioral testing in small animals. Mike serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and is the backup member for the veterinarian on the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Mike is responsible for the humane care and use of research animals at JMU. He oversees the day to day operations in the vivarium. He ensures the animals are cared for and maintained in accordance with the Animal Welfare Regulations, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. He trains students and faculty on proper animal use techniques.
Mike oversees laboratory safety in coordination with Risk Management, ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. He serves as a key liaison between Risk Management and faculty, staff, and students, facilitating communication, resolving safety concerns, and promoting a culture of responsibility and awareness across research and academic environments.
