On March 24, President Alger announced that JMU is planning to be fully open for in-person classes during Fall 2021. On May 27, the President announced vaccination expectations and other safety measures.

Beginning fall semester 2021, JMU will require students to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to moving onto campus or attending classes. Documentation that you have received the vaccine is due to the University Health Center (UHC) by July 8, 2021. More information. Find a vaccine here.

Can I defer my admission if I’m unable to begin my program on time due to travel restrictions, health, or personal reasons?

It is possible to defer your initial enrollment. Contact your Graduate Program Director, explain your situation and make your request. The Graduate School will try to support all requests for reasonable accommodations. Please submit your request to defer your initial term of enrollment to grad@jmu.edu. Write to us if you have any questions or need assistance.

My program is online or off-campus, do I still need to meet the vaccination expectations of the university?

Students who are enrolled in programs that are 100% online  will not be required to follow the vaccination expectations, however, COVID-19 vaccinations are strongly recommended for everyone. Students enrolled in international programs offered through the Center for Global Engagement must be vaccinated. If you have questions about the requirements for your program, contact your advisor or program director.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Yes, everyone is expected to wear a mask, vaccinated or unvaccinated, while indoors in public spaces on university owned or leased property while in the presence of others. For more information about masks, please visit the Student Mask FAQ page.

Do the deadlines for submitting my thesis, dissertation, other documents or degree completion deadlines still apply?

The Graduate School recognizes that the recent developments related to COVID-19 may cause delays in the completion of coursework by the stated submission deadlines. Please consult with your Graduate Program Director regarding your particular situation, and have your Program Director contact The Graduate School to request extensions on your behalf. The Graduate School will make every effort to accommodate all reasonable requests.

What if I can’t get a vaccine in my country?

Vaccines are widely available in the United States, but students who are in other countries may have difficulty obtaining a vaccine by the July 8 deadline. Vaccines will be available to international students upon arrival in August. Details for international students will be available from ISSS.

I have been offered provisional or conditional acceptance to a JMU graduate program. What if I’m not able to satisfy the requirements due to travel restrictions, visa delays, etc.?

Please contact your Graduate Program Director to discuss your situation. JMU will do all we can to help you, whenever possible.

I have been conditionally accepted to a JMU graduate or professional program and can’t obtain the documents I am required to submit because offices are closed. What can I do?

Please consult with your Graduate Program Director or the office of The Graduate School (grad@jmu.edu) for assistance.
