Application Deadline

The MPA program accepts applications on a rolling basis. Completed applications should be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the student intends to enroll.

For full consideration for graduate assistantships, completed applications should be received by Feb 15.

Program Begins



Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions should be uploaded with your electronic application and may be used for departmental admission review purposes. If offered admission, you will be directed and required to submit to the JMU Graduate School an official transcript from any institution from which a degree has been awarded to finalize your admission. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent to JMU directly from the issuing institution.

Required by Program
  •  Statement of Purpose, outlining professional goals and motivation for pursuing the M.P.A. degree
  •  Professional resume summarizing education, work, and volunteer experiences
  • GRE/GMAT is required unless the applicant:

    1) has a graduate degree

    2) has 4 or more years of relevant public sector experience and an undergraduate GPA of 2.8 or higher

    If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at JMU - GRE is required unless you have had 4 or more years of relevant professional experience and GPA of 3.0 or higher

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if native language is not English, unless you have earned a degree from a U.S. institution.

Applicants are expected to complete American Government and Univariate or Multivariate Statistics or Research Methods/Design; missing course work can be completed after application to the program.
