Welcome to the JMU Community!

Just as our students seek a sense of belonging, we want you to feel the same as you begin your new role at James Madison University. As faculty members, you play a vital role in shaping the student experience and contributing to their success. In many ways, our students learn as much from who you are and how you engage as they do from what you teach. While your focus may rightly be in the classroom and, for many of you, in research, I encourage you to take advantage of the wide array of opportunities JMU offers to build connections across campus.

The more you engage in university life, the more students will witness and model the importance of connection and belonging. Whether attending a concert or theatrical performance, cheering on the Dukes at an athletic event, holding office hours, or sharing casual conversations in our dining halls, every interaction contributes to the vibrant culture that makes JMU special. We are home to more than 23,000 students and you will quickly discover JMU remains a close-knit university—one that is welcoming, supportive, and deeply invested in the success of every individual.

As outlined in our strategic plan, The Madison Promise, we strive to foster a culture of excellence in all we do. Creating an environment where every member feels seen, valued, and connected is central to that commitment. As you settle into your new role, I encourage you to explore our beautiful campus and embrace the traditions that define the JMU experience. One of my favorites is our practice of holding doors for one another. It is a simple gesture, but it says a great deal about who we are; it reflects our spirit of hospitality and reminds us that we move forward together. I hope you will embrace our "Dukes Hold Doors" practice and take it a step further - don't just hold the door for others, walk with them! That's the JMU way—welcoming others in and helping them find their place.

One of the things I value most about JMU is how approachable our campus community is. If you see me on campus, please introduce yourself. And don't be surprised when colleagues, staff, or students stop to get to know you. Those everyday interactions help make JMU a place where people genuinely care about one another.

JMU has so much to offer, and at the center of it all are our people. The relationships you build here will enrich your experience just as much as the work you do. I am confident you will be inspired by what you see, hear, and experience, and we are grateful you have chosen to share your talents, ideas, and perspectives with us.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if my staff or I can ever be of assistance. You can find us in Alumnae Hall on the Quad. Best wishes as you begin this exciting new chapter and be sure to start practicing your "Go Dukes!" cheer. You are now part of a university that proudly lives, learns, and leads together as Dukes.

Welcome to JMU and Go Dukes!
