Adjunct Faculty Communities encompass a range of configurations and styles of adjunct faculty engagement in which faculty empower faculty in extended dialog, inquiry, and discovery around topics of common concern or interest.

We offer different types of adjunct faculty communities of varying scope, scale, and intensity, such as Learning Communities, Reading Groups, and Writing Studios. Click on the following buttons to learn more about each community or how to propose a faculty community of your own.

READING GROUPS: Discuss articles, books, or other written resources

This Adjunct Reading Group will explore current or canonical books on teaching, learning, and academic life. Educators from diverse disciplines and backgrounds will come together to read new research and writing higher education, to discuss emerging trends in higher education, and to find innovative and creative ways to apply insights gained from the readings and in-depth conversations. Up to 10 participants will receive a complimentary copy of the book.

WRITING STUDIOS: Offered In-Person & Online

Many JMU faculty find it challenging to balance their teaching responsibilities with their core responsibilities of research, scholarship, and creative endeavors. Join us each week, for one or both of our Writing Studios. We offer one day as an in-person studio and one day as an online (Zoom) studio.

Sign up for as many writing studios as will fit your schedule.

At the close of each session, participants will

  • Check-out by sharing their short-term goals for their project.
  • Leave with a sense of accomplishment, a clear sense of your next steps, and increased scholarly productivity.
