The traditional disciplines of the liberal arts and sciences are an important foundation for modern knowledge, each lending a distinctive tradition of inquiry to the human quest for knowledge. But some academic pursuits are not well served by the traditions of disciplinary inquiry. Cross-disciplinary studies encourage faculty and students to think across traditional boundaries in search of knowledge that can celebrate our differences while sustaining our common humanity.

Cross Disciplinary Studies at JMU showcase our diversity curriculum through minors such as Women’s and Gender Studies, Africana Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Environmental Studies and many others. Environmental Studies is a diversity minor, because it requires study into the human interactions with the environment, and cultural diversity is a significant factor in addressing environmental issues.
