Every supervisor dreams of a high-performing team where things just "click," and people work to accomplish goals beyond the status quo. If you want to have a team where acceptance, belonging and contributions are valued, and productivity and morale are high, come to at least five of the 7 workshops drawn from the Manager Moments series produced by Media Partners.

Workshops can be taken in any order and do not have prerequisites. Use the Team Excellence Tracking Sheet to track your progess. After completing 5 of the 7 sessions listed below, participants will earn a certificate. Please submit your tracking sheet to td@jmu.edu once you have completed the required courses. 


Session 1: Assess Your Team (TD2339)

Is your team strong? Is it troubled, stalled, or simply going through the motions? This module uses the characteristics of a high-performing team to help assess your team’s strengths and needs. Take this workshop to understand the first step toward building a successful and happy team.

After completing this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify the main takeaways of the ‘Assessing Your Team’ video
  • Recall the 7 characteristics of a high performing team
  • Separate self from the results of a team assessment
  • Design an improvement plan to better assist your team

Session 2: Unity (TD2340)

Do you want to create a more inclusive culture within your team? This module breaks down people’s basic emotional needs into three categories and creates direct paths to fulfill those needs in a team setting. Take this workshop to understand how to create a high performing team through the creation of a meaningful culture.

After completing this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify the main takeaways of the ‘Unity’ video
  • Understand the benefits of a unified team
  • Identify the A, B, C’s of team members’ basic needs
  • Establish a plan of action to create unity within your team

Session 3: Diagnose Problems (TD2341)

Is your team exhibiting a lack of energy, enthusiasm, or even worse, combative behavior?  Sometimes identifying the root cause can be very difficult.  This module breaks down manager and employee behaviors which can threaten a team’s culture and environment. Learn how to identify these contributing factors, address them, and move forward to enhance your team’s unity.

After completing this workshop participants will be able to:

  • List the behaviors that can affect team dynamics
  • Identify the threats impeding your team’s success
  • Establish a plan of action to increase your team’s unity

Session 4: Improve Communication (TD2342)

In today’s age, we have many avenues which we can use to facilitate communication with others.  Even with these options, it does not make communication any easier. Join us for this workshop to learn practical ways to communicate as a leader, with your team. 

After completing this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Share bad news with your team
  • Communicate good news and praise with your team
  • Understand how to enrich your team’s knowledge base
  • Implement open and regular communication as part of your leadership style

Session 5: Mediate Disputes (TD2343)

Nobody likes conflict, but if it goes unresolved, it can end up affecting the whole team, not just those involved.  Take this course to learn how to effectively mediate a dispute between team members to ensure a positive work environment.  

After completing this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Create a physically conducive environment for mediation
  • Maintain control of the conversation
  • Facilitate collaboration between team members
  • Provide guidance for members to resolve disputes independently

Session 6: Restore Unity (TD2344)

Is it time to get your team back in sync? Want to prevent a declining morale or cliques from forming? Take this workshop to learn the 7 important questions to identify the source of your team’s obstacles and return your team back to its high performing status!

After completing this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Ask yourself the 7 unity questions
  • Identify the source of your team’s lack in unity
  • Provide solutions for your team
  • Satisfy team member’s basic needs

Session 7: Stages (TD2345)

It’s inevitable, your team will continually cycle through four natural stages, but how you help your team get through these transitions is what matters. Come to this workshop to understand how to support your team and assist them in returning to the high performing and communicative stage as smoothly and quickly as possible.

After completing this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Recall the four stages of a team
  • Explain the characteristics of each stage
  • Provide support to your team during the Forming and Storming stages
  • Assist your team in its return to its Performing stage
