How to Apply

Applications for the Data Science for Society Graduate Certificate are submitted through the JMU Graduate School application portal. Review the requirements below before beginning your application.

Application Requirements
  1. Bachelor's Degree
    Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution prior to beginning the certificate program.
  2. Transcripts
    An unofficial transcript is required at the time of application. Official transcripts must be submitted upon admission.
  3. Application Prompts
    Applicants must respond to three short-answer prompts as part of the application (see below).

No statistics or programming background? MATH 522 is offered the summer before other certificate courses to help students build a baseline in both areas. See the FAQ for details.

Application Prompts

Your responses to these prompts help the program understand your goals, background, and readiness. There is no required length, but responses should be thoughtful and specific.

Prompt 1
Describe how you anticipate using data science in the context of your career.

Prompt 2
Describe your current experience level involving computer programming and other data science tools.

Prompt 3
If your transcripts do not show successful completion of a college-level introductory statistics course, describe any other training or experience that might be relevant.
